PERFECT FIT SIZING

There’s a lot more to collar shopping than just fashion. A properly fitted collar is essential to your dog's everyday safety and comfort.

Learn how to accurately take your dog’s neck measurement to get them the comfort and protection they deserve.

Choosing one that is too tight can cause skin irritation, restrict breathing, and even damage your pup’s delicate trachea. On the other hand, a collar that is too loose for your furry friend is more likely to slip off or snag on their surroundings.

When shopping for puppies, keep in mind they're still growing, so check their collar size frequently and adjust as necessary.

GET ON THEIR LEVEL. Sometimes a poorly fitted harness is obvious, but it might be harder to tell other times, especially when assessing shorter dogs. Watching your pup’s movements from a lower perspective can help you get a better idea of how the gear they wear affects their posture and movements. So don’t be afraid to get on the ground for your next game of fetch, and pay special attention to your dog’s shoulders, sternum, armpits, and between their front legs.

Step 1

Grab a soft measuring tape.

Our favorite is tailors tape, the kind of flexible tape measures that seamstresses use. These will give you the most accurate dimensions.

  • If you don’t have one on hand, you can use a piece of ribbon or string and measure the length against a ruler afterward.

Measure around your dog’s neck where their collar lands. It doesn’t matter if they sit or stand, just be sure your dog is in an upright and comfortable position.

To get the most comfortable fit for your dog, you’ll want the tape measure to be snug but not too tight. You should be able to easily slide two fingers between the tape measure and your dog's neck.

  • For fluffier dogs, remember to take a measurement that will allow enough room for all of their fur under the collar.
